The City of Adel has postponed the bid on Alabama Road improvements needed for the Walmart Supercenter project since there was only one bidder to pick up plans, City Manager John Flythe said.

The City’s engineering firm has sent notices out to potential bidders for a new bid date of 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at City Hall.

Flythe is hoping that the City gets more than one bid. If not, he will probably not open the bid and wait for the regular Council meeting on Monday, June 15, to decide how city officials need to proceed.

According to John L. Stover Jr. with Carter & Sloope Inc., the City’s engineering firm, there was only one plan holder (Reames) and no assurance that even that plan holder would submit a bid. Carter & Sloope has sent Addendum #1 for the Alabama Road project and invitation to bid back out to the following qualified contractors specifically: Littlefield Construction Company, Reeves Construction Co., Ross Construction Co., Inc., Rountree Construction, Rowell Contracting, Scruggs Company, and Woodard Construction Company Inc. Since then, Scruggs has also gotten plans and specs, and based on conversations with their head estimator, Stover expects they will submit a bid this week.

Work is expected to begin soon on paving and drainage improvements for Alabama Street that will benefit traffic flow in the area of Adel’s Walmart, expected to employ more than 200 people.

The award will be subject to the actual purchase of land by Walmart from Williams Investment Co., which should be on or around June 15, 2015, according to city officials.
